Whitney And Smith Place At Mat Classic XXXII

The Eatonville High School boys wrestling team would send six wrestlers to the WIAA’s Mat Classic XXXII state wrestling tournament this past weekend at the Tacoma Dome.

Qualifying for the state tournament for the Cruisers were Austin Frink (106lb), Ty Whitney (126lb), Zachary Smith (126lb), Mathew James (145lb), Hunter Sonnenberg (152lb), and Kaden Miller (285lb).

Of the six wrestlers, the Cruisers had two of them go on to place at the tournament.

Ty Whitney would lose his opening round match and then battle his way through the consolation bracket to secure a 5th place finish.

His match by match results were:

  • Champ. Round 1 - Emerique Gonzales (Toppenish) 11-1 won by major decision over Ty Whitney (Eatonville) 41-12 (MD 15-1)

  • Cons. Round 1 - Ty Whitney (Eatonville) 41-12 won by major decision over Carter Berrey (Sedro-Woolley) 3-3 (MD 9-0)

  • Cons. Round 2 - Ty Whitney (Eatonville) 41-12 won by major decision over Cole Pass (Washougal) 4-2 (MD 10-2)

  • Cons. Round 3 - Ty Whitney (Eatonville) 41-12 won by major decision over Gage Sabin (White River) 13-5 (MD 14-0)

  • Cons. Semi - Emerique Gonzales (Toppenish) 11-1 won by decision over Ty Whitney (Eatonville) 41-12 (Dec 7-2)

  • 5th Place Match - Ty Whitney (Eatonville) 41-12 won by decision over Eduardo Matias (Centralia) 8-4 (Dec 5-3)

Zachary Smith would also lose his opening round match and work his way through the consolation rounds to take a 7th place finish.

His match by match results were:

  • Champ. Round 1 - Gabriel Smith (Pullman) 36-9 won by fall over Zachary Smith (Eatonville) 35-14 (Fall 1:58)

  • Cons. Round 1 - Zachary Smith (Eatonville) 35-14 won by fall over Kaden Latchaw (Tumwater) 4-6 (Fall 3:00)

  • Cons. Round 2 - Zachary Smith (Eatonville) 35-14 won by decision over Caleb Walters (W. F. West) 6-4 (Dec 8-5)

  • Cons. Round 3 - Eduardo Matias (Centralia) 8-4 won by fall over Zachary Smith (Eatonville) 35-14 (Fall 4:02)

  • 7th Place Match - Zachary Smith (Eatonville) 35-14 won by decision over Gage Sabin (White River) 13-5 (Dec 17-10)
